French Matting

French matting is the art of applying water-colour washes and lines painted in unlimited shade variations and widths to a matted border in order to embellish any type of paper-borne subject. As early as the eighteenth century, artists were cutting windows into thick paper and ornamenting their borders with polychrome lines and washes for presentation. By the nineteenth century, paper art was being matted with multiple layers of glued paper, decorated and placed in frames under glass. This process became prevalent throughout the Continent, but was nearly lost during the industrial revolution as skilled artisans passed away.

In the late sixties, Buchanan & Kiguel began the tedious task of not only rediscovering, but also reinventing those lost techniques. Today we offer hundreds of French mat designs, all of which can be tailored to specific needs. Not only are they suitable for period framing, but also for all types of contemporary paper art.
